Platinum vs white gold
Platinum and white gold are the two white metals for fine rings, and they are made very differently. Platinum is white on its own; white gold is gold alloyed white and usually plated with rhodium. Here is how they compare, side by side.

What it is
Platinum is a white metal in its own right. Jewelry platinum is usually Platinum 950, at least 950 parts per thousand platinum, and it has its bright white finish without plating.
White gold is gold alloyed with nickel or palladium, plus copper and zinc, and usually plated with rhodium for its bright white. In the United States a surface layer of rhodium has to be disclosed.
Side by side
| Compared | Platinum | White gold |
|---|---|---|
| Color, and how it stays | Platinum: Naturally white; keeps its natural white color. | White gold: Usually rhodium-plated for its bright white; the plating wears away gradually. |
| Plating | Platinum: None needed. Some makers plate it anyway, and then it needs re-plating too. | White gold: Renewed from time to time, more often on a ring worn every day. A rhodium layer has to be disclosed. |
| Weight | Platinum: About 1.6 times the same ring in 14k gold. | White gold: The lighter of the two. |
| Allergies | Platinum: GIA calls it hypoallergenic. | White gold: Some alloys contain nickel; palladium white gold is the nickel-free choice. |
| Wear | Platinum: A scratch moves the metal aside; a soft satin patina forms, and a polish takes it away. | White gold: The lower the karat, the more durable the gold; 18k is somewhat softer than 14k. |
| Tarnish | Platinum: Does not tarnish. | White gold: Gold resists tarnish. |
| Metal value today | At the reference gold and platinum prices (October 13, 2026), the metal in a platinum ring is worth about the same as the same ring in 14k gold and about 35% less than in 18k gold, even though platinum weighs about 1.6 times as much as 14k. Sara quotes the finished piece, which also includes platinum’s extra bench time. | |
| Upkeep | Platinum: A polish when you want the mirror back. | White gold: Re-plating from time to time. |
Why people love it
Platinum: a white that is the metal itself, with nothing to re-plate; the weight on the hand; and GIA calls it hypoallergenic.
White gold: a lighter ring, in 14k or 18k, with a bright white finish from its rhodium plating. For a nickel allergy, palladium white gold is nickel-free.
Trade-offs
Platinum: about 1.6 times the weight of the same ring in 14k gold; a patina that returns with wear; and more bench time, because it melts at 1,768 °C against gold’s 1,064 °C and takes longer to bring to a mirror polish.
White gold: the rhodium plating wears away gradually and is renewed from time to time, more often on a ring worn every day, and some white gold alloys contain nickel.
Who it suits
Sara’s answer is that both are good choices. Platinum, if you want a white that needs no plating, and you like the weight. White gold, if you would rather have a lighter ring.
Either one is a white metal, which can make a colorless or near-colorless diamond look more colorless.
Sizes
By the studio’s own densities, Platinum 950 is 20.7 g/cm³ and 14k white gold 12.9, so the same ring weighs about 1.6 times as much in platinum. The Design Studio shows the weight of any design in grams and pennyweights; switch the metal to compare the two.
What affects the cost
Platinum costs less than gold per ounce, and has since January 2015, but a platinum ring holds more metal by weight, and GIA notes that its labor costs more. White gold adds its rhodium plating, and the re-plating later. The stone is separate, and Sara quotes the finished piece.

Care
Clean it in warm water with a drop of dish soap and a soft brush, rinse, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Pacific Jewel rings come back to Sara for a clean and an inspection whenever you like.
Platinum: a polish takes the patina back to a mirror whenever you like. White gold: bring it back when the rhodium has worn, and it is re-plated.
Questions
Is platinum better than white gold?
Neither is better for everyone. Platinum is white without plating and heavier; white gold is lighter and usually rhodium-plated. Both are good choices.
How often does white gold need re-plating?
From time to time, more often on a ring worn every day. Sara can tell you when yours is ready.
Which is better for a nickel allergy?
Platinum, which GIA calls hypoallergenic, or a nickel-free palladium white gold. Some white gold alloys contain nickel.
Does platinum cost more than white gold?
Per ounce, platinum costs less than gold. A platinum ring holds more metal by weight and its labor costs more, so Sara quotes the finished piece in either metal.
